5 Fashion Rules to Leave Behind

Hey Guys!
Whomever said rules were made to be broken might have been a bit of a troublemaker. But when it comes to fashion rules, I have to say I agree. Fashion is subjective. Everyone has their own personal style and view on fashion. That’s what makes it so fun. So setting rules in fashion is kind of an oxymoron because you can’t set rules for something that is open to interpretation.
There are a good supply of fashion rules out there and some of them, which I like to think of as more of guidelines than rules, make sense. For example, layering is a great way to add interest to an outfit in addition to added warmth. That’s a good “rule” or as I said before, guideline.
Then you have some other rules that are kind of outdated and really don’t belong in the world of fashion any longer. In this day and age when expressing your true self is ever so present, it is only right to extend that into the world of fashion. So many people express themselves with their clothing choices. So let’s say goodbye to the rules. Here are 5 fashion rules to leave behind and say “see ya never!”
1. Never Wear White After Labor Day
First up, the age old “no white after Labor Day” rule. I left this one behind many years ago. I love wearing white in winter. It’s actually a thing. Winter white. Look it up if you don’t believe me! I mean, who doesn’t want to match the snow when it freezing cold out but looks so pretty. I want to look pretty like the snow.
You can even really kick it up a notch and wear a head to toe white outfit (see more on mono chromatic looks in just a bit.) For a more subtle approach try a white or cream jacket or simply rock your favorite white jeans.
2. Always Match Your Accessories
Second we have the good old “always match your shoes to your bag” rule. Or really, just matching accessories in general. This is not to say you shouldn’t match your accessories, just that it isn’t the only option.
While yes, it can sometimes look great to pair your white bag to some white heels, it isn’t a necessity. Don’t feel like you can’t wear that amazing colorful bag with completely different colored shoes.
Try it out with something safe if you want, like an animal print bag and some red shoes. Or wear something complimentary colored such as some blue booties and an orange belt.
You could also wear something in a similar color family like blue shoes and a turquoise bag. Or play it a little more on the safe side and try different colored neutrals.
3. Don't Mix Metals
This third rule is definitely one that many people think is a no no, but I am all for it! You can absolutely mix different metals amongst your jewelry! I always wear silver rings, I, sure you’ve seen them in many of my photos. But I typically wear gold necklaces. I’m not sure why but I tend to be drawn to gold necklaces and silver rings more than their counterparts.
Now a days they even make jewelry composed of more than 1 color metal so that is just screaming for you to jump on board this mixed metal train!
4. Never Mix Different Prints
Alright, so rule number 4 might be a little more daring. Mixing prints has always been a no-no. It clashes. But when done the right way, it can be really cool!
Some people really go for it and just toss together some very vibrant and loud prints and they rock that look. I am not one of those people. I like to take more of a subtle route and stick with similar colors and less in your face patterns.
Some great prints to try to mix are polka dots and stripes. Florals are great to mix with all kinds of prints, try it with a plaid of a similar color. I also think an animal print with stripes would be cool.
The key to mixing busier prints is to try and keep the color way similar throughout. Alternatively, using colors that compliment one another is also a good route to try.
5. You Shouldn't Wear All the Same Color
This is the last of my fashion rules to leave behind and it, too, can be a little daring. But it looks so cool when you are able to accomplish it! It may have once been a fashion faux pas to wear the same color over your entire body, but those days are no more.
I love wearing a monochromatic look that has a little variation in the shades. Can you wear the exact same hue and shade? Totally. Try something like a suit set with the same color top. Or a sweater and skirt ensemble. I love the idea of tossing on a jacket too. Having different fabrics and textures is an awesome way to make this look work.
For something a little sexy, try wearing a bodysuit or sheer top as part of your outfit.
There are plenty of other fashion rules that you can go right ahead and break, because like I said, it’s subjective. So wear whatever you want! Do you have any other fashion rules to leave behind? Let me know down below! See you next time.
