How to Stretch Your Wardrobe | Living More Sustainably
Hey Guys!
If you happened to check out my New Year’s post, you know that one of my goals this year (and moving forward) is to live more sustainably. One way I intend on doing so is by getting more use out of my clothing. I am going to show you how you can stretch your wardrobe and get more wear out of what you own.
Some people like to do what is called a capsule wardrobe, where they have a very small wardrobe which they make tons of different outfits out of. These consist of essential items which never go out of style that they mix in with a few seasonably trendy items each new season. It can be anywhere from 20-50 different pieces. But it really depends on the person and their own interpretation of a capsule wardrobe. That is one thing you can certainly do.
If you own a larger wardrobe, this can still work for you. It will help you have less of those “nothing to wear” days. It will also help keep you from tossing items you might not reach for by seeing them in a new way by paring it with something you might not have tried before.
I put together 5 different outfits using 1 skirt which was thrifted. Buying things second hand is another great way to be more sustainable and is another way I intend on moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Check out these looks I put together to give you some inspiration for styling your own clothes in ways you might not have originally thought of!
You might remember this awesome floral maxi skirt from my fall thrift haul post. I have been really into midi and maxi skirts and it has been fun finding ways to wear them during these colder months. Here I paired it with this cute cotton button front top, a {faux} leather jacket, a western style belt, and some black suede ankle boots. This coin necklace is one of my favorites, as you will see I paired it with the next look as well. Another way to stretch your wardrobe.
This outfit is perfect for so many different things. You could wear it for a casual day out, meeting up with your girls, a concert, the list goes on. It’s easy to wear and is trendy without being too out there.
For this look I thought it would be fun to pair the skirt with a graphic tee and a blazer with some chunky booties. This look gives me some cool girl vibes and is something you could rock for a trendy work event, night out at like a comedy club or something, really any sort of event which you want to be more than casual but not super dressed up, and trendy at the same time.
This outfit is for those nights out when you want to look a little sexy. Date night, girls night, you know the ones. I like that this skirt can be worn as a mid-rise or as more of a high-rise. I tried it both ways for this look and liked them both!
I paired it with a sheer turtleneck with a black bralette underneath, this super cozy teddy bear style coat, a layered necklace, and some taupe ankle boots. This would also look cute with heels too! I’m just not a big heels wearer, in all honesty, so I went with something more realistic for me.
This one might be my favorite of the 5. I am super into pairing sweaters with skirts this season. It is such a comfortable and cozy outfit. I also love the subtle pattern mixing with the leopard booties. They’re a super small print, almost more of like a polka-dot leopard print.
I love putting a belt with these kinds of outfits but it looks just as cute without it. I went with a simple 2 layer necklace which is another one of my favorites and this awesome black wide brim hat. Another great casual day out kind of outfit which could just as easily be worn for a night out.
The key to being able to stretch your wardrobe and getting the most wear out of a single piece of clothing, is to not shy away from wearing something you deem as “dressy” in a more casual way. Skirts and dresses can totally be made more casual and now you can see a few different ways you can do just that.
This last look is my go to for a causal day where we might run to the library for story time, a play date with friends, going out for the day somewhere; something where I want to have on a cute outfit without sacrificing comfort.
I knotted this black t-shirt to define my waist and tossed on this super cozy cardigan. I have on the same necklace and booties as the last look.
That just goes to show you how much you really can stretch your wardrobe. I reused several accessories intentionally to show you that you don’t necessarily need a lot of things to get totally different looks out of your closet.
I hope you got some great inspiration and ideas for your own closet and how you can make your clothes go further. What kind of items do you struggle with styling? Let me know in the comments and I can do a post on different ways to wear it! See you next time. ☺
