Hey Guys!
Believe it or not, I didn’t have an actual skincare routine for a long time. I used many different products and didn’t have any idea if what I was using was what my skin actually needed. Skincare can be confusing and frustrating. The market is saturated with products claiming to do this, that, and the other thing. So it can be really hard to know what products will actually work and what products your skin actually needs.
As a teenager and even a young adult I had pretty bad acne. I tried different prescriptions and creams to try to clear up my skin. Ultimately it came down to what I was eating in addition to using the proper products and now I have pretty good skin.
I never realized how much diet had to do with your skin. But it makes perfect sense, you are what you eat they say. So I recently learned about specific types of foods to focus on incorporating into my diet to help keep my skin clear and glowing. I figured this would be some great info to include in this so you too can benefit from it, so let’s quickly talk food.
Obviously the greasy, fatty type stuff is just not good for you period. But it especially is no good for your skin. The foods you want to look for are called phytonutrients. They contain high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits which help to protect from UV damage, reduce fine lines, and make your skin glow. The following are the foods you should really focus on adding to your diet.
- Red, orange and yellow vegetables and fruit (such as tomatoes, carrots, peppers, squash, sweet potatoes, peaches, mangos, melons, citrus fruits, and berries)
- Dark green leafy vegetables (such as spinach, kale, bok choy, broccoli, Swiss chard, and romaine lettuce)
- Whole grain products (such as brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, barley, wheat berries, and whole wheat whole grain breads and whole grain cereals)
- Nuts and seeds (such as walnuts, almonds, sunflower, sesame and flax seeds)
- Legumes (such as dried beans, peas, lentils, soy beans and soy products)
The next important step for me was to determine my skin type and the skin issues I have that I wanted to try to fix. I definitely have combination type skin. Depending on the time of year I can have fairly oily skin or fairly dry skin. I also tend to have oily skin in my t-zone and dry spots in other areas of my face. So I try to use products for combination skin types.
I also tend to get little bumps creating unwanted texture on my skin. You can’t really see them but I can feel them and sometimes it makes my makeup go on a little rough. I also tend to have enlarged pores which just collects all kinds of gunk. I have hyper-pigmentation on my cheeks and chin causing some redness and an uneven skin tone. Lastly, I have a little bit of acne scarring on the outside portion of my cheeks. So any products that cater to those issues are right up my alley.
I should mention eye products. I don’t really have issues with my eyes although I do believe in preventive care, especially when it come to the eyes. The skin around your eyes is very delicate and so it really needs to be taken care of. I don’t really have a favorite eye cream since there are just way too many that promise so many things while very few of them actually work.
So I just make sure to keep the area moisturized and I do use some sort of under eye cream to prevent aging. I am not including one in this post however since I don’t have one that I totally love and would want to recommend to you.
Let’s go ahead and get into the products I use in my everyday skin care routine.
For face wash I use this one from CeraVe for normal to oily skin. This really dries out my skin so I only use it once a day and then at night I will use these Neutrogena makeup wipes if I had makeup on that day and then this Garnier micellar water on a cotton round to cleanse my skin.
These next steps I only do in the morning. I follow up my cleanser with this facial serum from Veise. It definitely moisturizes my skin and it is also helping heal my acne scarring. I’ve been using it for just under a month and I am slowly seeing improvement which is exciting. This also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also giving you a glowing complexion. It is also meant to reduce hyper pigmentation and help even out skin tone. I have seen some improvement with these as well, so I really recommend you try this stuff out if you have any of these issues.
I then use this Nourish Organics Argan oil which is one of my absolute favorites. I love Argan oil and use it on my hair, body, and nails as well. This one smells divine and gives my skin a huge moisture boost which looks amazing under makeup. My skin literally is glowing when I put makeup on. Some days I skip this oil and just use my CeraVe moisturizer and I also just use this at night. The moisturizer I use is for normal to dry skin because I don’t really need oil controlling lotion since I use the oil controlling face wash. That face wash is enough for my skin since I don’t have a huge oil control problem.
There are a few other skin care items I use a few times a week to help keep my skin healthy and glowing. This Dr. Brandt microdermabrasion skin exfoliant is expensive but it is so worth the money. This gets rid of all that unwanted texture I was telling you about. It leaves you with a fresh, smooth layer of skin. And a little goes a long way so it takes me months to go through a whole bottle. I will never not use this stuff, it’s that good.
I also love face masks and I will do these 2-4 times a week. I don’t have specific favorites but I love sheet masks and mud masks the best. This set of 24 masks have tons of purposes for your skin and they’re super affordable, so awesome! I love mud masks like this Dead Sea one which detoxifies, reduces oils, cleanses and minimizes pores. The last things I use once a week are these Biore charcoal pore strips. I swear by these. They get out all that gunk clogging up and enlarging my pores.
I know it sounds like a lot but it really isn’t considering I don’t use all of these products every day. I have seen a big difference in my skin since sticking with these products so it’s worth it to me to use all these things. I do like to switch up some things such as the serums, oils, and masks that I use so if I come across another product that is awesome I will update you. I also would love to hear some of your favorite products so be sure to leave those in the comments! See you next time. ☺
