Battle of the Mascaras | Too Faced Better Than Sex VS. L’Oreal Lash Paradise

Let’s start this battle! We are going to be looking at two mascaras, one of which is my all time favorite. Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara has been a favorite of mine for quite some time, but it is pricey at $23 a pop. So when L’Oreal came out with the very similar looking Lash Paradise mascara for only $10 earlier this summer, I was instantly intrigued. Now as I’ve said many times before, I will most definitely spend more money on higher quality products. But when I can find a similar product for a fraction of the cost then you know that is what I’m going to do. The Packaging
Obviously we have some huge similarities here. The color, the material very similar. The Too Faced tube is heavier and slightly larger than the L’Oreal. L’Oreal has a few differences with the gold detailing and the black lettering but I think it is kind of obvious that they were, shall we say, inspired by Too Faced.
Then if you look at the actual cardboard packaging, there were some similarities as well. They both included statistics of claims actual consumers made after using their product. They both include photos of before and after use. Then again we see similarities in coloring.
Some of the claims on the actual packaging itself include increased volume, longer lashes, and Too Faced included a curling effect. So this sounds like an awesome mascara on both sides, they both have the things I most desire in a mascara.
The Product
I opened these bad boys up to first compare wands. Mascara wands can vary greatly and they have a lot to do with how your mascara goes onto your lashes. I was surprised that these two wands were incredibly similar looking. The Too Faced one was just slightly larger with slightly longer bristles and it was a little more of a true hourglass shape than the L’Oreal wand. But at first glance it was promising that this L’Oreal mascara could give Too Faced a run for its money!
The other incredibly important part is the formula of the mascara, that will also alter the way the mascara goes onto your lashes. It can mean a clumsy application versus fluffy lashes. It can mean a heavy application which would weigh your lashes down thus losing that curl you desire versus light weight which would keep those lashes curled to the sky.
I want a mascara that gives me length and volume without clumping, flaking, or smudging and something lightweight that will hold a curl. That is usually a nice mix of wet and dry formulation, not either of the two extremes. If it is too dry that is when you start to get issues with clumping and flaking. If it is too wet your lashes will smudge and will be so weighed down that they will never hold a curl.
I was surprised that the finished application of both mascaras was so similar. I mean, I was floored! The main difference I noticed immediately and which initially worried me was that the L’Oreal mascara was a little wetter than Too Faced. I naturally thought I would see droopier lashes on that side of my face. But that wasn’t the case. It dried down quickly and held the curl well!
I must say that because the L’Oreal wand is slightly smaller and not as heavy it was actually a little easier to apply the mascara than with the Too Faced one. It took a little getting used to with the Too Faced wand to not get mascara on my eyelids or under eye. But once I figured it out it was super easy to apply.
I love how wispy my lashes looked with both mascaras. There was definitely length and volume that was very noticeable as well. I applied two coats on both sides and I didn’t use an eyelash curler before applying. I wanted to test the curling effect with the product alone. And I must say for having stick straight lashes, these mascaras both did a pretty awesome job curling my lashes and holding that curl.
The Verdict
I am so excited to tell you guys that the L’Oreal Lash Paradise is 100% an excellent dupe for Too Faced Better Than Sex. Go ahead and save yourself that $13 and run, don’t walk, to get this mascara for yourself. I found myself a new favorite.
