NYX Total Control Drop Foundation Review
Hey Guys!
In case you don’t already know, I have a minor makeup obsession. I love trying new things and playing around with new looks. So when I saw NYX came out with this new dropper foundation I had to see what it was all about. NYX is one of my favorite drugstore makeup brands. Their products are amazing quality and super affordable. If you are as curious as I was about this new foundation then just keep reading to get my full review.
The Packaging
To start, let’s talk packaging. it comes in a frosted glass bottle which I love and then the top unscrews to reveal the dropper which is how you dispense the product. It is so easy to use and control , mess free, and very hygienic. I love the idea of this packaging so definitely a big thumbs up in this department.
The Formulation
Next up is the formulation of the product itself. The product claims to be adjustable coverage with a velvety matte finish. It was suggested to use a brush to buff the product onto the skin. As you can see in the photo, it is quite a thin formula as it easily runs down my hand. It says to use less drops for sheer coverage and more drops for a fuller coverage.
There is a wide range of shades to chose from, 24 to be exact, which is awesome and increases the chances of getting a good match to your skin tone. The shade I used is Light Ivory and I found it was a perfect match for me.
My Review
Ok so I really wanted to love this foundation but it ended up being more of a just ok in my book. The reviews are actually quite positive so I am not sure if it just did not want to work with my skin or what!
First of all, I am not entirely sure which skin type this would be best for. Initially I would say combination or oily skin as it is supposed to have that velvety matte finish which is not ideal for dry skin. However, I have combination and skin and found that the very few dry patches of skin I do have held onto the product more than other areas of my face. So it seems maybe oily skinned folks would have the best luck with this.
I tested it out 4 different ways before finding a way that had a finished product which I was satisfied with. Before each attempt I made sure I had freshly exfoliated skin to try to keep the results as uniform as possible. I tried it on its own using a flat top brush as was suggested and that was by far the worst result. It clung to dry patches of skin and you could see brush strokes no matter how much I tried to blend it.
Next I tried it with a primer underneath and again with the same brush. I found it did a little better with having more of an even look although it did still cake up in some areas like around my nose and there were definitely still brush strokes.
My third attempt was using it on its own with a damp Beauty Blender. It went on nicely with no obvious application marks but I definitely saw those dry patches of skin had much more product than the rest of my face.
So for my last attempt I used a primer and my damp Beauty Blender and that was how I got the best results which are pictured in the above look. There was very minimal caking and it seemed to blend over my dry patches much easier. I was pleasantly surprised that the Beauty Blender didn’t soak up a ton of the product as I feared it might since it was so thin so I was able to get some good coverage.
Overall, I was surprised how thick it seemed going on initially since it was so watery on my hand. But it did blend out into more of a sheer coverage on the first application and was build-able as I added more product. I was happy with the finish and I do agree that it is velvety matte. As far as lasting power goes, it is not necessarily a long-wear foundation, but it didn’t claim to be. I found it did ware off on parts of my face by the end of the day, so that is a bit of a downside. Perhaps with a setting spray it might last longer. The biggest downside for me however, was the fact that you need a primer and some sort of makeup sponge to get the best application so I can’t count on this to be an everyday, easy to wear foundation. Having to apply it this way is more time consuming so I would most likely use this for special events or a night out but since the lasting power isn’t there this would not be ideal for those types of events. Sadly, I will not be repurchasing this foundation. I hope they reformulate or come out with different formulas that have more of a luminous or dewy finish. Since so many other people had great results with this, I think it is worth it to give it a try and see how it reacts to your skin, you can always return it if need be!
Hope you found this helpful and if you have tried it please leave me a comment with your thoughts on it! I am curious if anyone else had similar results. Also, let me know if you guys like these kinds of posts and I will be sure to do them more often!
